The Views on a Room Heritage Symposium will take place one week in advance of the heritage charette. Three panels will discuss the practical and theoretical questions raised by the material and historic layers of the Bright Parlour, the introduction of modern systems, and the intended use of the space for classes, meetings and receptions. Traditional methods of restoration will be contrasted with newer possibilities for approaching the space through different perspectives that extend beyond the heritage conservation field.

Each panellist is asked to describe how they would approach the restoration or rehabilitation of the Bright Parlour, keeping in mind the following questions:

  • How can we balance the need for modern functionality with the desire to preserve the stories told by the layers of existing materials?

  • How do you approach this space from within your discipline?

  • How can your approach help us to understand the complex layers in the room?

  • What is gained or lost by keeping older layers or adding new ones?

The topics of the three panels will be: Conservation Philosophies, Interpretive Approaches and Materials and Systems Considerations.

Registration Fee: $80.00 (Includes lunch) Registration extended to April 18th! - Register today!
